Kitchen 2.0

You all remember my ugly kitchen, right? Let me refresh your memory.

So large, but so very small.

After all of the hemming and hawing, it is just about done. (Hemming and hawing? Man... I really need to stop hanging around old people.)

In the end, I decided that I wasn't going to spend money on fabric and things that I wouldn't buy otherwise. So I just used what I had with a few choice purchases thrown in ... and I think it looks pretty good.

I ended up buying another valance to match two that I already had. The ebay ad said that it is Waverly Vintage Norfolk Rose, but I don't know if that is true. What I do know is that I got the first two that I had at a thrift store in Detroit years ago for $1.50 each, and the third on off of ebay for $10 including shipping.

I ended up putting my red hutch in in front of the windows, instead of building a shelving unit thingy like I had originally thought I would. I think it looks better, and that way I didn't have to buy a counter top for a shelf that I would never use again.

I hung an old cast iron mailbox that I took off of our old house when we sold it (I replaced it with a $5 plastic one), finally hung a cast iron fork and spoon I found at the thrift store a year or so ago ($2), some French pictures (thrift store ($2.50) and my grandma's egg plate on a thrift store plate rack ($1.20) I spray painted black. While I had the spray paint out I also painted a yard sale wine rack ($1.50) that we use for sugar free flavored syrups.

Fork and Spoon

Oh La La!

Mail box and plate

Not sure that this is, but it looked kind of like an old bathtub to me

I finished it off with a planter that looked kind of 50'ish to me to hold my dish cloths and a collection of old pitchers I didn't even realize I had.

So now I just want to find fabric for the red cabinet (the white gets dirty too fast) and bring my old drop leaf table in for in front of the window and then I will be done.

I like it! I am so challenged when it comes to decorating, but blogs like yours encourage me to keep trying. :)

Thanks! I know the feeling, though. I am so bad at this decorating thing, it is scary!

I think the thing that makes it work for me is that I buy what I like, put it where I think it looks the best, and don't care (too much) if others don't like it. Although... it is nice when people tell me that they do. :o)
